About Dodds Doors
Way back in 1958, a young John Dodds opened up DODDS Garage Doors in what would have been considered today, the greater Toronto area (GTA). You have to remember that was well over fifty years ago, and at that time, anything outside the Toronto core was close to, or was rural. Where Mr. Dodds opened his office was pretty much small town Ontario, where everyone knew their neighbours, and watched out for each other. To John these small town values were important to him, and it's certainly one of the main reasons he was able to grow the business. Back then, word of mouth was DODDS Doors main source of marketing, so if you messed up or charged too much, the word would get out, and chances were, you probably would not be in business too long.
As time went on and the GTA grew, so did DODDS, but John stuck to his values and his belief that if you treat your customers with respect, the word would get out. Mr. Dodds was told over and over again that the way to increase profits was to do what many other Toronto area door companies were doing to make higher profits they maximized the dollars per repair. There was a simple formula:
Quote lower prices on the phone, then send out a commissioned technician, who would drive up the invoice by recommending the home or business owner replace other parts, that in most cases were not needed, resulting in the repairman and the door company making more money. They are well trained in this method of maximizing profit.
Of course John Dodds totally rejected this unethical way of doing business. He refused to pay commission to his repairmen, even though he knew it meant less profit. The DODDS good name was (and still is) more important to maintain.
To this day, we at DODDS still follow the same philosophy and stick to John's principles, even though the rest of the industry has changed, we will continue to do business the "DODDS way".
